Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Archaeology and History ComplexClassified as a national archaeological and historic site, Pointes-à-Callière covers many centuries of histories, from the amerindians to today. Located on grounds that are witness to more than a 1000 years of human activity and on the same grounds as the foundations of Montreal, it contains remarcable architectural vestiges that are promoted in situ.
Inseparable from its site, the Museum exists most notably because of the important archaeological findings and digs that were done in Old-Montreal during the 80's. Founded in 1992 during the celebrations surrounding the 350e anniversary of Montreal, Pointe-à-Callière is the only large scale Canadian Museum dedicated to archaeology. It is also the biggest and highly frequented history Museum of Montreal. On May 17 1998, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada recognizes that the Museum is located « on the site where Montreal was founded» and that Pointe-à-Callière is a National Historic Site of importance. This hommage is also an acknowledgement of the restauration work and promotion of heritage done by the Museum. In 1999, the ministery of Culture and communications of Quebec officialy appoints Pointe-à-Callière as a national historic and archaeological site. These two hommages are an official acknowledgement of the heritage value of the sites and of the Museum. |
